6 December 2020: The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) at the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC), organized an event in which two new temporary political parties were issued with registration certificates. The two political parties are:
1. Unity and Fairness Party
2. The New Somali Party
Speaking at the event, the Registrar of Political Parties, Mr. Mohamed Omar Haydara, noted the ongoing work towards moving the country away from the divisive clan politics to a more inclusive politics through political parties. Mr. Haydara called on Political parties to abide by all the national laws that are relevant for their operations.
The Chairman of the Unity and Fairness Party, Mr. Mohamed Abdi Mareeye, thanked the ORPP for the transparent and fair registration process. He also appreciated the NIEC’s role in helping the establishment of the political party system in Somalia as this will enable the parties to participate in the democratization process including the universal suffrage elections which are expected to be held in 2024/25.
From 201 7 to date, NIEC issued provisional registration certificates to 108 political parties that fulfilled the temporary registration requirements as per the political party law.
