The electoral commission (NIEC), on the 20th August, held a workshop for women in Mogadishu.
The women participants were drawn from civil society organizations and political parties. Also in attendance were women parliamentarians from both houses of Parliament.
The workshop was meant to enlighten women on their roles in the electoral process and politics.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Khadija Osoble, a commissioner with the electoral commission called upon the women participants to actively participate in the electoral process and politics as the country gears up for universal suffrage elections in 2020. “I encourage Somali women to participate in the electoral process and play key roles in their respective political parties”. Stated Dr. Khadijah.
The women participants engaged the commission in a question and answer session on their roles in the electoral process and politics. They underscored the importance of women being enlightened so as to actively participate in the political sphere.
The NIEC chairperson Ms. Halima Ismail stressed on the importance of women actively participating in political parties as the country moves to a multi party system.
