The National Independent Electoral Commission, on the 19th August, met with the parliamentary adhoc committee on electoral law.
The electoral commission gave its recommendations to the parliamentary committee currently reviewing the draft electoral law before submitting to parliament.
The NIEC submitted to the committee on the need to consider time as a factor while reviewing the draft electoral law given the long process it has to go through before being adopted. The electoral commission also emphasized on the need to ensure the law is at par with international legal standards in the conduct of elections.
The electoral commission were categorical on the need to remove certain sections in the draft electoral law that clearly interferes with the independence of the electoral commission, an independent body mandated by the constitution to conduct elections.
The electoral commission also stated to the parliamentary adhoc committee on the need to have the law in place so as to enable the commission embark on important electoral operations such as Voter registration and permanently register political parties which are currently issued with temporary certificates.
The parliamentary adhoc committee on electoral law and the electoral commission had a fruitful discussions on matters pertaining to the draft electoral law currently under review.
