The NIEC Secretary general, on the 10th/July, met with representatives of several CSOs at the Mogadishu Somalia . The Secretary general highlighted the importance of the partnership between NIEC and Civil Society Organizations.
The CSOs are an integral part of the electoral process as stakeholders. The CSOs representatives thanked NIEC, through the secretary general, for their participation in the meeting. They asked questions regarding the pending electoral law and how one person one vote elections could be conducted without the law in place.
The Secretary general Mr. Bashir expressed optimism that the law will be passed by Parliament.
He reiterated that the electoral model for the 2020 elections lies with the Somali people.
Mr. Bashir also called upon the parliamentarians to speed up the process of enacting the electoral law so that the electoral commission could start working on civic and voter education to sensitize the public on their voting rights and voter registration.
The Secretary general also spoke about the electoral cycle. He underscored the importance of the elections to the Somali people and reiterated the need to support the electoral body as it gears up to conduct universal suffrage free and fair elections in 2020.
