The National Independent Electoral commission, held a forum with former South African electoral chair Mr. Johann Kriegler from the 22nd to 23rd April on his experiences in managing South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994.
The forum was a question and answer session where the NIEC delegates asked Mr. Kriegler questions regarding the conduct of 94 elections at a time when the country was coming out of the Apartheid system. The two countries share the same experience and Mr. kriegler’s expertise were vital to the Commission in their mandate to conduct the first democratic elections in the country.
Mr. Kriegler shared his expertise and experience on how to manage elections in a post conflict country, elections dispute resolutions and how to ensure integrity of elections, a crucial aspect that ensures the conduct of a free and fair elections.
NIEC chair Ms. Halima Ismail, in her closing remarks, thanked Mr. Kriegler for sharing his expertise and knowledge with the commission,
NIEC is keen to enhance the capacity of its staff so as to ensure they are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills required for the conduct of the coming elections.
