NIEC commission board member Ms. Khadija Osoble participated in the ICPS 17th INTERNATIONAL ELECTORAL AFFAIRS SYMPOSIUM in Accra Ghana. The main objective of the symposium was to bring together EMBs from around the world to share their experience in relation to the use of technology in elections. It was also a platform for the vendors to hear firsthand from the EMBs. The symposium also created an opportunity for the EMBs and the technology (election kits, software’s and accessories) vendors to network.
In the symposium a range of topics were covered that were significant for both the election technology vendors as well as the Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs).
It was discussed that there is need for the EMBs to utilize technology in electoral activities like registration, verification and result transmission technologies in cost effective way. Participants also appreciated that EMBs need to build the trust of all electoral stakeholders since technology alone cannot solve all election related issues.
The symposium was concluded with international electoral awards to individuals and EMBs that were able to succeed in country specific challenges and /or contributed to successfully hold fair and free elections that is inclusive.
