Four universities in Bosaso were today visited by the NIEC delegation who were in Bosaso for the past few days. The universities the delegation visited were Bosaso University, East Africa University, Red Sea University and University of Health Science. The purpose of the visit to these universities was to meet their administration and devise ways in which the electoral commission can work with the education institutions to implement its strategic plan.
The administration of the visited universities expressed their appreciation towards the delegation’s visit. They all promised to work with the electoral commission and that they will play their role in the democratizaiton process of the country.
Among the topics that were discussed in detail during the meetings with the university administraions were:
• Comprehensive study on the people’s understanding and perception towards elections and democracy.
• Preparation and implementation of the currriculum of Civic and voter education
• Review of the current curriculum taught in the universities to match the needs and the aspirations of the Somali people.
• The role which the higher education institutions can play in the implementation of the electoral commission’s strategic plan.
Lastly, the deputy chair of NIEC handed over copies of the working documents of the electoral commission to the universities’ administrations. Among the books which the universities were given the commission’s strategic plan and the lexicon of election terminologies.
