The land, which is a 16091 meter square, situated in Waberi district near Halane, is within close proximity to the capital’s airport. The land is intended for use as a site for a permanent central office of the electoral commission. They urgently require a space for their vital work and the Japanese government will cover the cost of the building for this purpose.

The formal handing over of the land was both a significant and joyful moment. The Mayor of Mogadishu delivered a tremendous speech stating that this land was granted for the purpose of general public use as national property.

The Chairwoman of the National Independent Electoral Commission, Ms Halima Ismail Ibrahim (Halima Yarey), also delivered a remarkable speech in which she thanked the mayor’s generous act, highlighting the necessity for the land to remain national property that does not belong to the chair of the commission or to any commissioners.

The Chairwoman also promised that the completed building would be utilized to serve the implementation of democracy and the establishment of a stronger government that safeguards and protects the interest of the Somali people and their constitutional rights. She stated that this was a historic day for the Somali people.

She added that the Electoral Commissioners have pledged to lead the Somali people in fair and free elections where all citizens can freely cast their votes and to strive towards abolishing the tribal electoral system which has hindered the progress of our country for so long.
