Training on comparative electoral representation systems Organized by the UNDP/UNSOM Integrated Electoral Support Group (IESG), a three-day training on comparative representation systems was held in
Mogadishu from 14-16 June with Commissioners from Somalia's National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC), Officials from the Ministry of Interior and Federal Affairs, officials from the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs, officials from the Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development as well as a member of the Federal Parliament.
The training was one of a series intended to enhance the knowledge and capacity of those involved in preparing #Somalia for universal elections and builds on the recent training for MoIFA officials on developing a Legal Framework for Elections. It is part of the UN's twin track support strategy to develop the foundations of Somalia's electoral capacity for the road towards universal 'one person one vote' elections in 2020.
The training was held in anticipation of the drafting process for the country's future elections law for universal polls.
An examination of comparative systems of representation was presented with a view to understanding different electoral models in the context of post conflict environments. Issues such as the means to enhance the representation of women and minorities were discussed.
The UNDP/UNSOM Joint Programme for Support to the Electoral Process in the Federal Republic of Somalia is funded by the European Union, Italy, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
